100 Years Ago – August 8, 1919
A most horrible accident happened at the house of Mr. and Mrs. George Miles about noon yesterday, when Miss Eva, grown daughter of Mr. Mills, accidently set her clothing on fire, and is so badly burned she is not expected to survive. She was starting a fire in the stove with oil when the oil can exploded, the flames enveloping her entire body. Mrs. Mills had her hands badly burned in an effort to extinguish the flames. Miss Eva has been residing in Memphis where she has a good position, and was here on a visit to her father.
The front page included a letter from Private Printiss W. Fulcher, which began with the October 7, 1917 gathering at Louisville of the men going to training and ended with the signing of the peace document June 28, 1919.
News reaches here that our long-time friend Mr. N. D. Triplett is very ill at his home in eastern portion of our county. He is one of the oldest and best citizens of the county.
LOUISVILLE: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dee Howard, a fine boy August 5th. - Mrs. Minnie Atkinson of Ellisville is visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Holmes and other relatives. - A. E. Miller, currently working in Indianola, came home this week to vote. - Gilbert J. Wood of Grenada spent a few days here this week with his mother, Mrs. E. V. Wood. - A. C. Hemphill of Belzoni spent the week end with his sister, Mrs. R. A. Johnston. - Our soldier boys Talmage Bradford and Houston Dempsey both returned home this week. - Miss Janett Campbell of Poplarville was the guest of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Cagle last week.

MARRIAGES: A wedding was solemnized at the Court House by Probate Judge Watkins Vaughan at 8 p.m. Saturday. The contracting parties were Miss Elizabeth Hight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Hight, and Mr. J. Baker, both of this city. Miss Hight is a niece of Mrs. R. A. Webster and has made her home with her aunt for several years.

FRONT PAGE: Ford and Bond schools will open August 14th. - Wounded In Action: Pfc. John B. Taylor, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Taylor, was wounded in France July 11. - Pvt. Henry C. Goodin, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Goodin, was wounded July 2nd in France. - Mr. T. L. Richardson received news that his son Pvt. Frederick S. Richardson was wounded in France July 20th. - Mr. and Mrs. A. H. McCool of Noxapater have three sons in the service at this time, T/5 Albert H. McCool, Jr., Lt. (j.g.) Doyle A. McCool, and A/S Wallace B. McCool.
Bane Hudson shot and seriously wounded Will Scott Saturday evening at the Hudson home. The shotgun blast at the back of Scott took out several ribs and part of one lung. Hudson is locked up in Ackerman’s jail, while Scott is in the Philadelphia hospital.
LOUISVILLE: Mrs. Alva Wood is spending this week with her brother, L. J. Williamson and family, in Charleston. - Mrs. Marvin Moody is in Baptist hospital in Memphis following a serious surgery. Mr. Moody reports she is getting along as well as can be expected.
WEDDINGS: Miss Avenell Eaves and Mr. William E. Hill were married in Macon August 5th, Rev. Robert D. Pearson officiating. The bride is a daughter of C. B. Eaves and the groom is the son of Mrs. H. E. Martin. - Mr. Byron Milton Owen announces the marriage of his sister, Virginia Carr, to T/S John Delno Holt July 21st in Vicksburg.
NOXAPATER: Jeff Barns, Jr., stationed at a Naval airbase somewhere in the South Pacific since early 1943, is spending his furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Barnes. - Mr. and Mrs. John E. Ray and little son of Meridian are guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Hensley.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Files are the parents of a daughter. - S1/c and Mrs. Broughton Gillett are the proud parents of a daughter, Linda Frances, born August 9th, 7 pounds 1 ounce. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Ferguson on July 15, a fine son, named Tommie Jack Ferguson, at 15 pounds. - Mr. and Mrs. Thad C. Barrier welcome a son, Thaddeus Charles Barrier, Jr., born August 6th. - Seaman and Mrs. M. M. Hartness are celebrating the birth of a son, Jerry Malachi, 5 pounds, 9 ounces, August 4th.
