100 Years Ago – August 1, 1919
Winston County Fair revived for this fall, following a meeting of a number of the stockholders of the Winston County Fair Association, held last Saturday. The vote decided to reorganize and give a Fair this fall.
FOR SALE: On account of ill health which compels me to leave the county, I am offering for sale two 1100 pound 8-year old mules, one small mule and 80-acre farm and residence, located at Claytown. J. D. Miles, Fern Springs RFD 2.
LOUISVILLE: Get your syrup cans from H. H. Hull before the present stock is gone. - Miss Mosey Parkes of Noxapater was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thompson the past Sunday. - Mrs. Allie Kent and little son, and Mrs. Vera Thompson, of Bessemer, Ala. are visiting Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Linch. Mrs. Kent’s little son is the only great-grandson Mr. and Mrs. Linch have. - Tom White, who has been in Arkansas for several years, is visiting his parents in northern portion of the county. - David Cockrell gave us the biggest snake tale the other day that we have heard in some time. He and Whitney Hall killed 52 Moccasins, some very large, in one hole in Murphy creek last Sunday. - Mr. J. T. White is seriously ill at his home near Betheden. It is not thought that he can survive but a short time. - Mr. J. W. Hughes brought us a stalk of sugar cane 15 feet in length, the largest we have heard of this season.
Winston County received two of the government trucks this week, allotted by the Government and is promised two more as soon as they are received into the State. The two received are Nash two-ton Quads, with steel beds, the same as the Quad owned by Beat 1. The two trucks cost Winston County only about $400 and are worth around $8,000. They can be used on the present dirt roads to good advantage. Let the good work go on.
MARRIAGES: While they sat in their car at the Baptist Parsonage last Saturday, Mr. Willie Woods and Miss Ila Kennedy were joined in wedlock, Rev. J. E. Wills saying the ceremony. Mr. Woods was reared in Choctaw County.
NOXAPATER: Mr. C. C. McLeod is back home from a week’s visit with his brother H. D. at Lanty, Ark. - Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. Taylor and sons Boyce and Curtis of Shaw spent a few days with Mrs. Taylors’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Curtis. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Shepherd on the 20th, a fine girl.
75 Years Ago – August 5, 1944
Louisville residents had to take cover Thursday, July 26 about 7 p.m. when a west wind blew through the area for about thirty to forty minutes. Old timers said they had never seen a straight-line wind blow through this long or this hard. More than 100 homes suffered some kind of damage, mostly chimneys and roofs. Several stores in town were damaged as well. The most lasting damage was done to fruit, pecan, and shade trees throughout town, many of them being landmarks that cannot be replaced.
DEATHS: Cpl. Thomas Able Hanna has been reported killed in action since the invasion of France, on June 23rd. Born and reared in the Calhoun community, he had only been overseas for about three months. - Pfc. John F. Garrard, 34, was killed in action n France June 23rd. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Garrard of Noxapater.
LOUISVILLE: Mrs. Otis Boyles, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Boyles of Hattiesburg and Miss Ann Meriweather of Canton, traveled to Lubbock, Texas for the Army Air Corps graduation where Barney Lewis Boyles will receive his pilots wings. - Mr. Rowzee celebrated his 61st birthday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Davis with many of his family members present. - Last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Breazeale enjoyed having their entire family together for the first time in five years.
WEDDINGS: Miss Theo Yarbrough, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ike Yarbrough of Liberty, and Mr. Elisha W. Hobby, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Reece Hobby of Hinze, were married July 1st in Meridian. - Miss Ada Doss, former Louisville High teacher, and Mr. E. A. Phelps were married in Los Angles recently.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Wall were called to Greenwood Monday on account of the serious illness of their daughter-in-law, Mrs. E. L. Wall. They had the pleasure of seeing their son while there. - Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Holman have recently purchased the S. J. Hopkins home and have moved in. Mrs. Nora Ellis purchased the Holman house.
