NEWS FROM YEARS PAST
July 18, 1902
The 20th annual session of the Webster County Sunday School Convention was held at Cumberland, 15 miles north-east of this place, commencing last Wednesday morning and closing yesterday afternoon. The membership of the convention comprises about 27 Sunday Schools, with an enrollment aggregating 1,500 pupils and an average attendance of about 1,000. Nearly all of these schools had a full representation present, evidencing the interest manifested by all sections of the country and in this great and good work. The Convention was opened Wednesday morning with music and devotional exercises. The morning session was consumed by the delivery of the welcome address, the annual address, and in hearing the report of the committee on credentials. The PROGRESS failed to secure a complete report of all that transpired, in time for this issue. This session was pronounced one of the most successful and enjoyable meetings of that body held for years. Those attending from the local schools were: Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Gwin and Mrs. H. M. Earnest from the Baptist Sunday School, and Messrs. L. B. Phillips, T. H. Goza, Miss Pearl Moore, and Miss Daisy Lamb from the Methodist Sunday school, and Rev. V. J. Bell.
The District Meeting of Zion Association, held annually, will convene next Thursday and Friday, July 24th and 25th, at Philadelphia church, in the northern portion of Webster. The committee on arrangements has prepared an interesting and instructive program for the occasion, a large representation from churches of the district will be present, and the meeting gives promises of being a both a spiritual and social success.
