100 Years Ago – May 23, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Don’t forget the Ice Cream at the Park Wednesday afternoon. - Miss Ruth Arnett of Philadelphia is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Dubard. - Miss Sallie Triplett of Mashulaville is guest of Misses Beatrice and Bessie McCully. - Miss Annie Lou Dempsey was the recipient of a Certificate at the school hall Wednesday evening, given to her for being neither tardy or absent for seven years. This is a record worthwhile. - William Powers was awarded a medal Wednesday evening at the school hall, for making the highest average in the entire school for the session of 1918-1919. His average was 98 and by the way is the highest average made in this institution. - Mr. E. C. Lewis celebrated his 70th birthday Thursday by giving a dinner to several of his relatives.
NOXAPATER: Little Miss Mary Reed is on an extended visit to her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd near Preston. - Mr. Foster Whisenant attended the Centennial at Memphis this week. - St. Johns Day, June 24, will be celebrated by the local Masonic Lodge, with a public picnic. Mr. M. R. Grant of Meridian will deliver the address on this occasion. - Mr. and Mrs. Callahan and Messrs. C. M. Wood, Fabian Fraser, J. M. Harris, W. W. Gunn, and others attended the Shriners Meet at Meridian this week.
The old soldiers met last Monday and decided to hold the annual meeting of the Confederate Veterans Reunion this year on July 4th and to invite all of the young soldiers, both those who went to the Camps, and the oversea boys, to participate on this occasion. It is the desire that we have the biggest occasion the old soldiers have ever had.
75 Years Ago – May 26, 1944
LOUISVILLE: Miss Grace Chaney has arrived from Huntingdon College, Montgomery, Ala. to spend the summer with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Chaney. - Miss Ruth Langley of Millsaps College was up for last Saturday and Sunday to spend time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Langley. - Mrs. W. A. Strong, Jr. and daughter, Mary Ann, are visiting with their husband and father at Camp Peary, Va. - The following young ladies have returned from M. S. C. W. for the summer vacation: Misses Caroline Pittman, Marjorie Woodruff, Mary Ruth Taylor, Oteria Bennett, Bessie Sue Hull, Doris Elaine Triplett, and Lois Woodward. - Mrs. Clarence Bennett and small son Sonny have returned to Jackson after a two weeks visit with Mrs. Willie Bennett.
WEDDINGS: Miss Elvine Carroll and Troy White were married May 20th at the home of Rev. W. C. Kitchens. Both bride and groom are prominent residents of the Bond community. - J. C. McQueen and Mrs. Evie Sullivan were united in marriage Saturday afternoon, May 20th, with Rev. W. C. Kitchens performing the ceremony. - In Grenada on May 5th at 6 o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Webb, Miss Etta Mae Triplett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Triplett of Noxapater, became the bride of Mr. Donald Randolph Lockett, son of Mrs. C. E. Lockett and the late Mr. Lockett.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. Ollie Hanna of Calhoun community was the guest of Mrs. Bouchillon and other relatives the past week. - Mrs. Emery Wright spent the past week with her mother, Mrs. Viola Wright in Louisville. - Mr. and Mrs. Otis Black and children of Raleigh, Tenn. are here visiting with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Kilpatrick. - Miss Sara Dunn of Meridian is at home for a few days’ vacation. She is taking a course in sheet metal work.
BIRTHS: First Lt. and Mrs. W. Douglas Nettles are announcing the birth of a baby girl, Mary Robbins, May 21st at the Louisville Hospital. Mrs. Nettles is the former Miss Ruby Suber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Suber of Louisville.
DEATHS: Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Miss Maggie Irene McAdory, age 14, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Rev. W. C. Kitchens in charge. Interment following in the church cemetery. Miss McAdory died Sunday morning at Jackson Infirmary after suffering an acute case of leukemia. She was a student of Noxapater High School. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. McAdory, a sister, three brothers, and a grandmother, Mrs. Irene McAdory of Philadelphia. - On May 14th, funeral services were held at Liberty Baptist Church for Homer Carter, 37, who died at the Louisville Hospital Saturday, May 13, after a four-day illness, Rev C. C. Weaver officiating. Mr. Carter was a successful farmer, born and reared in the Liberty community. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Frank Carter, three sisters, and four brothers. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
