100 Years Ago – March 21, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Fair and children, and Mr. and Mrs. A. Y. Woodward and son, were called to Oxford Friday to attend the funeral of the Mesdames Fair and Woodward’s father, Ex. U. S. Senator Sullivan, who died Thursday night. - Fred Davis was over from McCool last week to see his father, Dr. H. H. Davis. - W. W. Estes, one of our most liberal-hearted mill men, is offering the public stove wood free of charge and is almost begging people to haul it out of his way at his mill, just south of town.
DOSSVILLE: The Dossville Basket Ball team, composed of Allen and Grady Miles, Duey Long, Nute Mills, and Dewit Parker, won the championship game for the third year at Kosciusko on Saturday the 15th. They will play Choctaw county at Ethel on the 11th. Allen Miles is the Captain.
NOXAPATER: A party from here Messrs. G. W. Jarvis, W. A. Gunn, W. T. Stevens, Rev. J. F. Sansing, Dr. T. F Kilpatrick, and Misses Algy Kilpatrick and Lola Huntley made a trip to the state Capitol last week. - Mrs. Richard Hopkins and baby from near Plattsburg were guests of Mrs. S. J. Hopkins Sunday. - Mrs. Thompson was honoree at a dinner Saturday at the dormitory, given by Mrs. J. P. Turnipseed. A number of friends participated in the evening’s pleasures.
75 Years Ago – March 24, 1944
FRONT PAGE: First Sgt. Earl W. McClellan, USMC, son of Rev. and Mrs. J. F. McClellan of Lauderdale, Miss. and brother of Mrs. C. G. Blue of Louisville, has been reported killed in the Pacific area. He is the second member of the McClellan family to lose his life in the present war. His brother, Flight Officer J. K. McClellan was killed last April, while serving with the Army Air Forces. - Saturday night Mrs. Mamie Alice McGraw Mauk received the news that her husband, Lt. Charles N. Mauk, was killed in an aircraft accident over Shropshire, England March 7th.
DEATHS: Funeral services for Mr. Sam Judson Suttle, 82, of the Liberty community, were held at Noxapater Baptist Church Saturday, following his death Friday after an extended illness. - On March 18th, Mr. H. H. Bowie passed away at his home in the Calvary community, following an extended illness. He had been in failing health for the past few years. He had never fully recovered from a bout with pneumonia in December and developed it again last week. He had lived in the same area for over forty years. Services were held Tuesday at Shiloh Baptist, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, two children, Mrs. Walter Bennett and Pvt. Harjus Bowie of Camp Lee, Va., two grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister.
LOUISVILLE: E. H. Mauk of Toledo, Ohio and Pvt. Richard Mauk of Brookly Field, Mobile, Ala. visited Mrs. Charles N. Mauk Tuesday. - W. T. Dalton is in the Missouri Pacific Hospital in St. Louis where he is receiving treatment. - Mrs. Florence Hutchison and Mrs. Bernice Black and daughter of Weir spent Thursday of last week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Fancher.
GUM BRANCH reported Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Eubanks are the proud parents of a fine daughter, born March 17th.
WEDDINGS: Mr. and Mrs. John H. Kirk of Louisville announce the marriage of their daughter, Ruby Correne Kirk, to Seaman 2/c Herman W. Reed of Louisville. The ceremony took place at the home of Rev. W. I. Allen March 14th. - The chapel of Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, Washington, D. C. was the site of a March 4th ceremony joining Miss Janie Grady and Kendall Hobbs in marriage, pastor Dr. John W. Rustin officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Alma Grady and the late Mr. J. S. Grady of Union, Miss., while the groom is the son of Mrs. C. O. Hobbs and the late Mr. C. O. Hobbs of Spartanburg, S. C. Mrs. Grady is better known as a popular first grade school teacher here.
NOXAPATER: Miss Kathleen Kelly has accepted a Civil Service appointment and will leave Friday for Washington, D. C. - Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Porter and children of Ackerman were guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. McBrayer last¬ week end. - Mr. and Mrs. V. F. Starks have returned home after an extended visit with their son Mr. John Starks and other relatives in Jefferson, Texas.
BIRTHS: Sgt. and Mrs. Pat Mizell announce the birth of a son, Pat Milton Mizell, Jr., March 10. - Mr. and Mrs. Howard Woodruff are the proud parents of a baby boy, born March 18th at Dr. Pearson’s clinic.
