LOCAL MATTERS: From the West Point Leader paper - Our old friend, Frank Townsend, Esqr., has started a newspaper in Ackerman called the RECORD, which makes three papers for that village. He is a forceful writer and will make a good editor. - The Ackerman Record is the name of a new paper edited by Hon. Frank Townsend. He was editor of the Choctaw Plaindealer several years ago and was recognized as one of the brainiest and most fluent writers in the State, and the press is rejoicing in his return to the journalistic arena. We gladly place the Record on our exchange list and wish it unbounded prosperity —- Cotton Belt News. We are glad to state that Mrs. R. K. Prewitt, who has been quite sick, is now convalescent. - Andy J. Martin and M. R. Irving of French Camp were here last week. - Mrs. Ida Morris, nee Coleman, of Somerville, Tenn., is visiting Dr. R. K. Prewitt’s family. - J. T. Gunter was in town Friday and Saturday assisting in the examination of Mr. Nason being sick. Misses Virginia Carter and Mary Staples, two of French Camp’s beautiful young ladies, visited Ackerman friends for a few days recently. - Our good friend Dr. J. M. Kellum was in town this week. He is a good Physician and upright, progressive man. - Will H. Tabor of Bankston was here Saturday.
Mr. Tabor is doing a splendid mercantile business at Bankston and we wish he may live long and prosper all the time for he is one of our deserving citizens. - Prof. H. L. Rhodes, one of the County Examiners, was in town last Saturday. Mr. Rhodes is from Beat No. 2, Attala county and we are proud to see him forging to the front. He is an elegant and accomplished young man. Mr. W. H. Power of Centreville was in town Tuesday. Mr. Power will be in the race for Supervisor of his Beat. There is no more intelligent man in this section and if chosen, will make a capital Supervisor. Following is a list of the names of the teachers who stood the examination here last Friday and Saturday: Misses Annie McDaniel, Carrie A. Thornton, Maggie E. Morgan, Cora Webb, Sallie Caldwell, Loula Black, Ella Carr, Iva Milligan, Ida Cole, Mary DeLashment, Maibell Moffat, Beulah Hathorn, Mary Staples, Rugenia Irving, Rosa Mecklin, Virginia Carter. Messrs. J. G. Griffin, H. M. Foster, L. C. Dempsey, Willie Kellum, S. T. Carr, W. T. Webb, C. L. Dobbs, S. M. Bateman, L. M. Sharp, AJ. Crawford, G. F. Wise. CANDIDATES FOR COTTON WEIGHER OF ACKERMAN: Mr. Dan B. McKinnon, known as a true and upright man. He is a good farmer and saw service through the entire Confederate war and was true to his Southland. – Mr. J. Wes. Moss, one of Choctaw’s best citizens, a good farmer, and in every way qualified to discharge the duties of this office. He was a gallant Confederate soldier and a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio. - Mack Irving has been a farmer all his life and has earned his living by the sweat of his face. He lives in the immediate vicinity of French Camp and was reared there. CANDIDATES FOR SHERIFF: Mr. G. Foster Black is too well known to the people to need any words of commendation from us, having taught school for several years in various parts of the county and served as Deputy Sheriff, in which capacity he gave entire satisfaction. Mr. Black is now serving the people of Ackerman as Mayor and discharges his duties without partiality.
