“After the storm, comes the dawn.”
I have forgotten who made this quote or where I saw it, but this is exactly what did happen in Mathiston
The people of Mathiston had been making plans to have the Mulberry Festival on May 4. However, three weeks before that day, the weather did not cooperate.
A tornado passed over the area, and trees and limbs were down, but, that did not kill the spirit and determination of the people any. The city workers got busy fast and began the job of removing trees and limbs that had fallen, including those in the park.
So finally, on Saturday, May 18, the Mulberry Festival was held in the town park in spite of the weather damage there.
Forty vendors came and appeared to have a good day, with the vendor who came from the longest distance away being one from Pearl. Many local vendors participated, in addition to some from Grenada, Greenwood, Tupelo and other places.
As always, this festival was kid and pet friendly. Children were there enjoying the activities for them and a few also had their pets with them. Many people took part in a talent show.
As this day brings so near the elections coming up in August, candidates for offices were welcome to speak. Candidates for supervisor, Justice Court judge and state representative made speeches. Candidates for Webster County sheriff were also on hand to speak. In walking around seeing them, you would never think they were running for the same office, as they were all friendly and visiting, and having a good day.
While at the festival, many people found their way to the new bell tower in the park to see the work on it and to see the plaques honoring those in the community who died in wars.
This happened to be a great day in Mathiston and has people waiting for another.
I think we all will agree that the Mathiston mayor and board, and the sponsors and organizers of this festival are to be commended for sticking with their plans, and not giving up after the storm and having events like this when so many other towns have stopped.
