Shawn Nygard was the guest speaker for the regular third Thursday meeting of the Sonshine Club on May 16 at Center Grove Baptist Church, which is pastored by the Rev. Thad Moore.
The Sonshine Club is a service-oriented group in the area and the guest speaker, representing the group to which he belongs, was a good selection for the program.
Shawn has been living in the area for over 17 years and has been pastor of Midway Church of Christ for 17 years. He was also an instrumental member of the old Maben Chamber of Commerce (now closed ) and many other activities in Maben.
Shawn has been elected to be president of the Maben Lions Club, after serving on many committees and positions, and is to begin his term in July. He joined the club in July 2006 and has served previous terms as president.
After a potluck lunch he updated the members of the Sonshine Club on some of the activities of the Maben Lions Club.
Shawn told about the Lions working with the eyesight program and helping to check eyes of students in the area, which is free of charge. He reminded the group of the eyeglass collection boxes that are seen in area businesses, in which anyone can leave their old glasses to be picked up and sent to a recycling center.
He also said the club will be working closely with diabetics programs in the future, as diabetes can affect the eyes.
Shawn also reminded the group that the Maben Lions Club has a Facebook page that any interested person can check the activities of the club.
At least seven members of the Center Grove Baptist Sonshine Club at this lunch meeting happen to be members of the Maben Lions Club.
