Melinda Newlin, who has served as Administrative Clerk at the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Department for 11 years, lives in Weir with her husband of 28 years, Paul, Jr.
They have three children, Brandon, 29, Christopher, 27, Tori, 25, and two grandsons.
Newlin has been a member of the Weir Fire Department for 12 years. She is an individual member of the Chamber of Commerce and has served on the First Responders Dinner Committee for eight years. And she enjoys spending time with family and friends, sunsets, meeting new people and working on jigsaw puzzles.
Newlin was elected to the Choctaw County Chamber Board of Directors in March 2016 and looks forward to serving another term. “Being a board member has been interestingly fun! I have really enjoyed it. I have met and made friends with some wonderful people in the county,” said Newlin.
A typical day for Newlin at the Sheriff's Department consists of entering time sheets, going through reports, transcribing interviews or taking care of process paperwork. She also accounts for any money taken in and gets deposits ready for the bank.
She does, on occasion, have Choctaw County Chamber Board meetings to attend, an occasional ribbon cutting or other special projects that come up with the Chamber.
Newlin stated that the most significant barrier in her career is never finishing college, but she feels that women do not have a hard time in career advancement unless there is no room for advancement in a particular position.
She loves to meet new people and they are her inspiration. And she has learned to not rush through life, but to enjoy it one day at a time.
