On May 21, the Maben Home and Garden Club held its Grand Finale with the installation of the new officers for the 2019-20 club year. Dottie Dewberry, an active club member since 1971, stepped in to facilitate the installation because of unforeseen deterrents.
Using the “It Is Written” ceremony and using pens as her medium representing the officers, each officer was duly informed of their duties and charged with performing such to the best of their ability. Thus Jane Collins will serve another term as president. Juli Fulgham, a new member of one year, will serve as the vice president. Sylvia Templeton, immediate past vice president, will serve as the secretary and Martha McMinn will continue as the treasurer. Then the remaining membership was charged to pledge to stand by the club and to work with the officers throughout the coming year.
Before the installation the president officiated the brief business meeting. After the minutes and treasurer’s report, it was reported that the Yard of the Month sign was placed in the yard of Ruth Carol Williams Hubbard by Dewberry.
Dewberry also reported that the Civic Beautification Committee, working with Shuff Landscape, planted three Sweet Bay Magnolia trees along Water Street. They also relocated two planter boxes down to Reclaimed Vintage Shop, where Fulgham has added new summer flowers to the shrubs already planted. She also announced that two half-barrels were placed at the shop in which Fulgham has agreed to plant.
President Collins reminded those personnel responsible for moving the sign as follows: June — Jane Collins, July — Dee Vail, and August — Pat Harpole.
New flags will be purchased using a generous donation from Pat Harpole. Wayne Yeatman of the Maben Fire Department and Dewberry will facilitate this project.
There was a brief discussion of periodically going to points of interest in place of meeting at the library. The new officers will take this under advisement when planning the new year.
The devotion and blessing for the day’s program was delivered by Dewberry. She used a short writing titled
“Two Coats” entailing that too many of us are all for giving to the poor as long as we are spending someone else’s money. In summary the club was advised to do to yourself what you do to others. She then blessed the food, which was catered by Olde Town Bakery.
The next meeting will be Sept. 17 at the Maben Public Library.
