“Coming Home” is the 16th edition of the folk life play that has been produced by the Montgomery County Arts Council since its inception in 2003. The stories from which the play is written are true Southern stories that are universal to anyone who grew up in Mississippi.
This season’s play is based on the 10-page memoir of Alice Rebecca Kindred Dorris, the memories of Bro. Gary Anglin and the writings of his grandfather, the Rev. Clisto Anglin, who wrote a column for The Winona Times in the late ’50s and throughout the ’60s called “Covenant.”
A third story that is included in the play is that of St. Sgt. Earl Jenkins, who was killed in action during World War II. He was initially buried in the Netherlands in Margraten Cemetery. The Dutch people were so grateful to those who gave their lives helping to liberate them, they placed flowers on the graves every week and honored the soldiers with a ceremony every Memorial Day.
Burt and Thea Eggen were so taken with the sacrifice made by Sgt. Jenkins that they searched for his family during a visit to the United States. They were able to make contact and made their way to the Bethel Church Cemetery, where Sgt. Jenkins is now buried.
Join the cast of Hill Fire as they bring these stories to life on stage.
