Due to the severe weather that impacted the state starting February 10-14, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) received damage reports from affected counties and continues to assist with response efforts.
Last week’s strong rains damaged a number of local roads, flooded some residents’ yards and other areas.
Nearly 6 inches of rain reportedly fell during flash flooding Feb. 10 and increased significantly during downpours throughout the week.
Winston County had at least 7 roads closed ( Garrigues at Crystal Ridge, Deer Run Road , Rocky Hill, Wright Road, Hwy 395, Asa Thomas and Luke Road were among those flooded). Choctaw county had 4 roads clsoed due to flooding that were reported to MEMA.
“Widespread and slow flooding causes tremendous damage to raods and can cost the county major funds for rebuilding and repair,” according to state engineers.
Saturday, February 15, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries executed 159 door to door knocks and were able to alert 510 individuals of the flood in an effort to evacuate the areas.
The Office of Homeland Security also performed 4 assisted evacuations during the day Saturday, in Edwards and Terry in Hinds County. No evacuations were needed last night.
At the time of this release, eighteen counties submitted damage reports to MEMA. Four injuries were reported.
