Dozens of Lions Club members from North and South Mississippi converged on Louisville at Lake Tiak O’Khata January 24-25 for the the Midwinter Convention.
The convention included representatives from dozens of clubs from throughout the region, and at least 65 people attended the gathering. Lions International Director Shea Nickell attended as well. Judge Nickell is serving a two term as director of the Lions Club International. Director Nickell serves as the Chief Pro Temper of the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
“The convention is basically a celebration of being a Lion,” said Mike Dowd, a Louisville member of the Lions Club and a District Governor for the North Half of the Mississippi Club.
In addition to covering business items that specifically relate to Lions members, the convention included opportunities for members and the general public to donate to some of the club’s causes.
The midwinter convention is the primary district fundraiser for the Lions of Mississippi Sight Foundation.
Different clubs host the Midwinter Convention from year to year. Louisville was the location for this year.
Nickell spoke to the attendees about the Club’s overall goals and other plans at the dinner completing the event.
In addition to the local Lions club hosting the convention, it incorporated some other aspects of local involvement. Louisville Boy Scouts presented the colors at the opening and closing of the convention and Louisville Mayor Will Hill welcomed the group.
“We’re glad to have all the members here visiting our community,” Dowd said.
Local Club officers for Louisville are Billy Joe Webb, Shari Flake, William McCully, Tracy McCully, and Judy Webb.
