Nineteen Interact Club members and two sponsors from Eupora High School spent the morning serving at the Memphis Union Mission on March 28.
Memphis Mission is a homeless shelter that has been serving the homeless in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1945. It ministers to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of men, women and families who are homeless, addicted and in crisis. The mission serves lunch and dinner daily, and offers shelter to more than 100 people a day.
The Interact members helped to serve lunch, attended a church service and cleaned up after the meal. In addition, each volunteer packed two hygiene bags and donated an additional item for the shelter. As a community service project the entire club at EHS made donations of socks, clothes and hygiene items.
According to one student, “Visiting the shelter and working FOR others who are down on their luck, helped me to realize how fortunate I am and encourages me to give more when I can.”
Sponsor Lyn Blaylock stated, “Being able to serve others is one of the greatest gifts we can give. Watching these young people interact with people they do not know and serving them in a respectful and loving way is so encouraging. We are truly blessed to have so many caring students at EHS who recognize the importance of giving back.”
Student organizer Raylin Cooper coordinated donations and worked with the shelter to plan the visit.
“I hope that this will not be a one time thing. It was so rewarding to be working at the mission and touching the lives of those we met,” said Raylin.
The Interact Club is a service organization sponsored by the Eupora Rotary Club. Members of the Eupora Rotary Club helped to sponsor the trip with a monetary donation.
