May3-12
LaDonna Caffey and Duane Shurden led us off this week. They always make an enjoyable show and pick out the good songs. I don’t know how long they have been singing together but they make a great team. I know they go to other places too here and in Starkville.
Later that afternoon we had our bingo and that night Leslie Lee asked us some questions from the Bible. She didn’t get much past Carolyn James and Nellie Long. The weekend brought New Hope singers and on Sunday, Mother’s Day, Maben Church of God of Prophecy came to see us.
Monday started National Nursing Home Week with the theme “Living Soulfully” and we started the week off with our annual balloon release outside. As usual we are all supposed to release them on the countdown. But, of course, some are early and some are late but it was still fun watching them disappear in the clouds … wonder where they went?
That afternoon we had expressive art. I didn’t go but I should have; it looks like, by the looks of the pictures they displayed in the hall, they had a good time. That night was Monday Night Bingo with a twist. They called it colorful bingo. We liked it!
We all had colored sheets at our table and once we bingoed we would receive a colored prize bag based on what color sheet was at our table. It was really fun and surprising to see what gift you would win.
Tuesday Mrs. LaDonna and her family came back to give us an awesome patriotic service for our second day of National Nursing Home Week as we recognized our veterans.
Wednesday was a day to remember; it was Country Day. First we started with Hee Haw Bingo. Yes, you guessed it, you had to say “Hee Haw” instead of “Bingo” when you bingoed or you couldn’t get that dollar the VFW donated.
At lunch we had a big family dinner in the dining room together. Most all residents were in there and the tables were set up long ways like we used to eat like a big family. The meal was delicious ! The dietary staff really went all out for us. Fried chicken, butterbeans, turnip greens, mashed potatoes with gravy , cornbread and homemade fried pies for dessert!
That afternoon we had Toad Donahoo and his crew come in. We even got to hear a steel guitar; haven’t heard one of those in a long time. Later was Bible class with Mathiston Baptist Church and that night we had a great porch singing where me and Nellie Long played our songs and everyone joined in. Clarkson Baptist youth came in to help us out to and visit. It was a treat.
Thursday we had Melvin Mordecai come in and give us a show with some oldies but goodies music and to our surprise the Jr. ROTC came in to visit and joined us in the activity room. Those kids did a few runs of their drills, even let this old veteran call some drills for them. Then they joined in the fun and did some dancing with us and the other staff. It was a fun, fun day.
That afternoon Matt Lomax came in with his country singing . I was real lucky. He let me play on his guitar and we sang a few songs. He is a good kid; I like him.
Friday was a day for staff to have fun. Leslie made them do some crazy games when they could find a few minutes to have fun and we just laughed at them doing it. That afternoon the East Webster band came over to play for us outside and V’s daycare joined them. It’s always nice to see young kids come see us.
We definitely had a great week to remember.
