December
Dec. 2 started us off with Bro. Carden and the Community Singers. We always enjoy this time each month. They have awesome harmony and we can pick our own songs.
It was Christmastime for sure around here. The Leslies were pulling stuff out of the sheds left and right. Later in the week we started decorating and got this place looking all festive.
Dec. 7 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The next day President Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Wasn’t much about it on the news. I was 6 years old when it happened; there wasn’t even a TV then.
We only had a battery-powered radio and when it got low we would have to pour water on the ground wire post to revive it. Sometimes we had to swap it out with the car. That’s how we kept it charging. Also at nighttime we saw by a kerosene lamp.
I can remember back then fighting for your country and its people. Standing behind your president and praying for your government. Back then I had three brothers that fought in the war. They all got back safely thank God.
I remember things were rationed though; times were really hard. Things like cane sugar, canned milk and gasoline for your car. You also ran your car till the tires fell off then you rode them some more because you couldn’t find tires, not even used ones.
After the war men started to come back home, still not good though. Jobs were hard to find at times. But you probably already know all this . I just figured I would give you a history lesson. Happy Pearl Harbor Day. Thank a soldier and his family today.
Later in the week we enjoyed Bro Tim Hudson and we had 27 in Sunday school. The next week we had Bro. Rob Faulk come in and we always enjoy his time. LaDonna, Sandra and Mr. Duane brought us a good singing the next day, and the Heavenly Highway Singers and Mrs. Debra Pruitt brought us a good singing on Thursday.
On Friday we played our own version of Dirty Santa. This game is fun enough for y’all when you play it at your grandma’s but it is 10 times more exciting with us here at Diversicare. We had 25 of us playing the game.
The 13th we got a surprise and Sonny and Jo came in to sing for us . They are family members of Terry Smith. They did fantastic and we all want them back soon.
Later in the week the staff had a fun week and did lots of fun dressing up but the funnest was the gingerbread house competition that we had to vote on. It was definitely a hard decision. They are all really good.

Celebrating Christmas, New Year’s
Christmas at Diversicare was a great time and it wouldn’t have been than way without, I’m sure, a lot of you reading this paper so from all of us at Diversicare of Eupora we say THANK YOU!
We started the month off with Lions Club and the 20th Century Club coming in to sing Christmas carols to us. It really means so much. Decorating was going on and people were coming in visiting left and right. Bringing us cards and candy; all that stuff to make us feel good and gain weight.
V’s daycare kids performed for us and they did a fine job. We are so glad when they come over. The Starkville Highsteppers came in also and gave us a dandy Christmas show; we all wish we could two-step like that.
Gingerbread house making was next and the next day we were visited by none other than Zoe Bigham, Miss Mississippi Teen USA. She is a one-of-a-kind young lady. She took up lots of time with us and even signed us some pictures of her. We all feel really special now.
That same day we were treated with one-of-a-kind Christmas music by Bailey Carwile, son of Christy Carwile. He can really play that piano and he always comes in on Christmas Eve or close to it to play for us.
We can’t thank Bro. Donnie Buckner for coming in with his bride to sing for us on Christmas Day. We also were treated on Christmas Day with Ann Cole and all her family and friends from Mathiston First Baptist Church. We had a very blessed Christmas Day here at Diversicare. We thank everyone who came to see us.
We would also like to thank the many who donated to us over the month. The countless items brought in from churches and groups and individuals and all the many people who sponsored a resident and purchased a Christmas present for us. We cannot thank you enough for all you do for us through the year. I would love to list each of you but I would be afraid I would leave someone off! Just know we thank you for it ALL!
We rounded out this month with out annual New Year’s Eve Party and brought in 2020. Remember to live, love and laugh or laugh, love and live. No matter how you slice it have a good year. That is from me to you — from Billy Depriest.
