The Webster County Board of Supervisors on Monday discussed the impending resignations of two county elected officials before their terms end.
County Prosecuting Attorney Jan Butler announced in a July 17 letter that he is resigning from that position effective Sept. 30, according to board discussion. He is not retiring from private practice.
Since July 2017, Butler has been serving as county prosecutor at a reduced rate of pay following his retirement under the Public Employees Retirement System. The county will not have to have a special election to replace him, but will have to appoint someone to fill out his term, which goes through December 2019.
Supervisors directed Board Attorney Buchanan Meek Jr. to send letters to local attorneys informing them of the upcoming vacancy so they can submit applications if interested in filling it.
Additionally, the board accepted a letter of resignation from District 3 Election Commissioner Etoile Herrod, who is chair of the county Election Commission. She is retiring as an election commissioner effective Dec. 31.
The board will declare her position vacant after Jan. 1 and will have to set a special election to fill the remainder of her term, which expires in December 2020. The special election will be part of the regular 2019 election cycle and will not be held separately.
