Should the high school baseball season return in Mississippi, Nanih Waiya head baseball coach Tyler Rodgers feels his team has as good a chance as any to be successful.
“I was really optimistic by how we were going to be this season and we were beginning to show some signs of it,” Rogers said of the 1-2 start his Warriors had on the year. “We didn’t play many games or get much practice in because of the rainy weather we had. I think that if we do get to come back we will be a team to deal with.”
The Warriors have eight seniors, who Rodgers hopes get to finish out their final seasons on the diamond.
“I hate it for the kids. A lot of them got to experience the success we had in football season, but some of them didn’t,” he said.
Rodgers said he has never faced a situation such as the Coronavirus pandemic that has been sweeping the county and the state.
“As baseball coaches we just thought we had an issue with the rain the last couple of years causing us issues,” he said. “That was nothing compared to this.”
Rodgers said that if the baseball season is restarted it would be best if teams had two weeks to practice, but it would more than likely be one.
“It’s just according to when we get back,” he said, adding it would be unlikely that if the team would play a traditional two-game series district schedule. “There just wouldn’t be time.”
Other teams in Nanih Waiya’s region are Noxapater, Ethel, French Camp, and McAdams.
