Time is not on the side of high school fast-pitch softball in the state of Mississippi, something Nanih Waiya head coach Cody Parkes is acutely aware of.
“The playoffs are scheduled to start the first week we get back,” Parkes said. “That would be hard to do.”
As of now high schools aren’t expected to resume on-campus activities in the state of Mississippi any earlier than April 20, if then. With the playoffs set to begin with two-out-of-three first round series on April 24-25, something obviously will need to change.
Parkes said the state may have to resort to something like region tournaments to decide who qualifies for the playoffs.
Nanih Waiya is in the same region with Ethel, Noxapater, French Camp Academy, and West Lowndes with no region games having bene played at this point.
The Lady Warriors have two seniors on the squad with Gabby Keel coming out for the first time this year and Kaylee Gregory having played for NW since the seventh grade. “I know this has to be tough on her,” Parkes said of Gregory.
Even though the 3-2 Lady Warriors had lost their last two games, Parkes said he was pleased with the way his team had been playing up until the suspension of the season due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We have got a bunch of young girls and we had only played five games,” Parkes said. “I think we were about to get into our groove.”
