No matter what sport you are playing, it’s a huge accomplishment when you can triple your win total from the season before. The Lady Warriors of Nanih Waiya did just that on the volleyball court as they turned a three-win season in the inaugural year of the program into a 10-win season in year two, finishing the 2019 campaign with a record of 10-9. “I think a lot of it was experience,” said NW head coach Dayna Hunter. “Honestly that first year the girls were just getting to know the game, and where to be and the right placement to be on the court. This past year we had a lot of girls who were juniors who really stepped up and this coming season they will be seniors.” It was also the Lady Warriors first year of district competition. The way volleyball was aligned in 2019, Class 1A schools and Class 3A schools could be in the same division, in fact the Lady Warriors had four Class 3A schools in their district this past season. This year volleyball has gone to six classifications and the Lady Warriors will be in a region with Class 1A foes Noxapater and Ethel. “That’s going to make it a lot better, competing against schools our own size,” Hunter said. “We are really looking to make the playoffs this year.” The Lady Warriors were able to close out their season and assure themselves of a winning record with a competitive four-set win over rival Noxapater. NW won the first two games 25-16 and 25-21, before dropping the third set 25-22. The Lady Warriors then closed out the match with a 25-21 win. The Lady Warriors posted a sweep over rival Noxapater on the season, taking a 28-26, 25-15, 25-17 win earlier in the season. “Being at Nanih Waiya, one of our biggest things is to beat Noxapater and we handled that this year both at home and at their place, so that was good,” Hunter said.
