The Lady Warriors of Nanih Waiya High school picked up a key region win last Tuesday when they took a 49-39 win over McAdams. The win put NW at 1-2 on the year in league play instead of falling in a deep hole at 0-3.
“With us losing the first two district games this first district win had to happen,” said NW head girls coach Sessums Russell. “We really played unselfish and came together to get the win.”
The Nanih Waiya boys dropped a 60-53 decision to McAdams.
The Lady Warriors did not play Noxapater as scheduled last Friday night, due to COVID-19 quarantine involving the Lady Tigers. The NW and Noxapater boys were able t play, however. Look for results of that game elsewhere is this week’s Winston County Journal.
This week Nanih Waiya was set to play road district games at French Camp on Tuesday and Ethel on Friday.
In the win over McAdams, Taylor Clemons led the way with 19 points, while Ambria Tubby scored 10 and I’onnya Coleman tossed in nine.
Russell said his Lady Warriors weren’t quite where he had hoped they would be, but said he believes his team has turned a corner. “Now that we’ve gotten the victory under our belt, a win at French Camp (would) have us sitting pretty.
“The COVID uncertainty has been tough,” he said. “We are trying to stay as prepared as we can and be healthy. We’ve had some key players already get quarantined and that’s hurt.”
He said the season will be game-by-game, week-by-week, as far as to how many contests his team plays as scheduled.
“We are just trying to take it one game at a time,” he continued. “The Noxapater game getting (postponed) was a let down, but I’m hoping it’ll give us time to get as many healthy girls back and ready to go versus French Camp (as possible).”
In the boys game against McAdams, the Warriors trailed at the end of each quarter, but essentially played the Bulldogs even after falling behind 17-11 at the end of the first period.
Tyquan McCully led the Warriors with 10 points, while Rico Moore scored nine to go with four steals and Ethan Dailey had eight points and four rebounds. Jake Vick scored seven and Trey McMullan had six points, five rebounds and two blocks and Izaiaha Nicholson recorded six points and four boards.
