French Camp Academy athletics are in a holding pattern with the school closed down for this week and next to the Coronavirus pandemic.
It comes at a time when the baseball team is off to a fast start at 6-0 while outscoring the opposition 68-28. The Panthers had games scheduled during the two weeks with Pisgah, Starkville Christian and East Webster. None are Region 5-1A games.
The first game scheduled after the two-week hiatus is March 31, a region game at defending champion Nanih Waiya. But at this time, nobody knows when, or even if, teams will be playing again this spring.
The softball team had one game scheduled with Nanih Waiya and two with Columbus during these weeks. Another Nanih Waiya game is scheduled for April 7.
“All I know is that we are done for two weeks,” said FCA softball coach Todd Chesser. “We’ll evaluate after these two weeks and go from there.”
The boys and girls track teams had meets scheduled for March 21 and March 28 at Winona High School. The next scheduled meet that might be held is April 4 at Ridgeland High School.
The tennis team had five matches scheduled this week and next. “Over the next two weeks, we will not be able to play all three of our district matches, Eupora, Mississippi School for Math & Science and East Webster,” said coach Larry Mincher. “In addition, we will not play two non-district matchers, Winona and Winona Christian. When and if we reschedule these matches remains to be seen.”
French Camp competes in Region 4 for Class I (1A and 2A schools).
The next match that might be played is March 31 at Forest,
All public schools in Mississippi and virtually all private schools are closed this week. The fact that French Camp has boarding students contributed to the decision to extend the closing a week. But even if school had resumed next week, there would not have been any athletics. The Mississippi High School Activities Association has suspended athletics and activities for two weeks.
The suspension means no practices.
