Weather has been an issue for teams around the area over the last couple of weeks and it has especially affected the Winston Academy Patriots on the baseball field.
WA had four ball games in two weeks that weren’t able to be played due to weather and three of them were cancelled. Tri County Academy scheduled two games against the Pats last week that weren’t able to be played and neither are expected to be made up. The same can be said for a Monday matchup against Clinton Christian earlier this week that has been cancelled.
Sandwiched in between those two contests, the Pats had a game at home against a 16-4 Marshall Academy team and the other Patriots from Holly Springs looked the part.
Marshall built a 6-1 lead through four innings and then dropped five runs on the board in the fifth on the way to a 12-2 win. WA had five errors in the contest and gave up 13 hits while having just five of its own in the blowout loss.
Reed Yates had two hits on the night and Braxton Rone had a double for the only real offensive high points in the game. Yates got the start on the mound and threw 1.1 innings with five hits, four runs and a strikeout while Rone also lasted just 1.1 innings and gave up four hits and five runs.
WA didn’t walk any -players but the visiting Pats’ 13 hits did all the damage.
Earlier this week, the cancelled CCA game was followed up by rain that came through the area on Tuesday postponing a matchup with district opponent Carrol Academy. WA rescheduled a double-header at home for Thursday evening and will go on the road to take on Carrol on Friday night at 6 p.m.
WA (13-7) is looking to move to 9-0 in division play and get closer to taking the district championship. Next week, the Pats close out the regular season with a three-game set against Canton Academy.
The Panthers will host a game on Tuesday, come to Louisville on Thursday and then finish out the regular season back at Canton on Friday night. All games are scheduled for 6 p.m.
