After finishing third in division play, Nanih Waiya opened the Class 2A playoffs last week with an opening round sweep.
The Warriors started with week with a pair of contests, losing 16-6 to Choctaw County and then beating Philadelphia 19-4 to finish the regular season.
The Warriors then opened up the Class 2A playoffs with 13-10 and 10-7 wins over Strayhorn to sweep the opening-round series.
Nanih Waiya improves to 13-10 on the season and advances to second-round play this week as they will travel to East Union on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Game 2 will be at Nanih Waiya on Friday at 5 p.m. while an if-necessary game three would be Saturday at 2 p.m. at East Union.
Choctaw County 16, Nanih Waiya 6
The Chargers used a pair of five-run innings to pull away and beat the Warriors by the run rule on Monday in a makeup game.
The Warriors scored two in the first and three in the second with one in the third. But Choctaw scored three in the first, five in the second and two in the third and led 10-6 after three innings. Choctaw then scored one in the fourth and finished with five in the sixth to take the win.
Choctaw outhit Nanih Waiya 13-10 in the contest. Walt McLendon was 2-for-3 while Braxton Flake was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Eli Stanton walked three times and scored two runs while Tanner Courtney singled and scored two runs.
The Warriors threw five different pitchers as Bentley King, Aiden Hill, McLendon, Flake and Chance Starnes each threw.
Nanih Waiya 19, Philadelphia 4
The Warriors put up three big innings as they took a six-inning, run-rule win over the Tornadoes on Tuesday.
Nanih Waiya scored five in the first, one in the third and finished with seven in the sixth and six in the seventh.
The Warriors had 12 hits and drew eight walks. Tanner Courtney was 3-for-5 and scored two runs while Braxton Flake was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Aiden Hill was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Gavin Daniel singled, walked twice and had five RBIs while Walk McClendon doubled, scored twice, and had two RBIs.
McLendon started on the mound and pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out four. Daniel and Courtney each threw an inning to close out the game.
Nanih Waiya 13, Strayhorn 10
The Warriors started hot and held on to take a three-run win over Strayhorn on Friday in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs.
After Strayhorn scored one in the top of the first, the Warriors scored seven in the firs and two in the second and led 9-1. Strayhorn answered with single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh, two in the third and four in the fifth. Nanih Waiya finished with single runs in the third and fifth with two in the fourth.
Nanih Waiya had 10 hits and drew seven walks and took advantage of five errors. Tanner Courtney was 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Aiden Hill was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Eli Stanton was 2-for-3 while Gavin Daniel doubled and drove in two runs. Walt McLendon walked twice and also scored two runs.
Ked Moore started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up three runs on three hits and five walks while striking out three. Bentley King then pitched two innings and gave up five runs, only one earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out two. Aiden Hill came in relief and pitched the last two innings and struck out two.
Nanih Waiya 10, Strayhorn 7
The Warriors drew nine walks and took advantage of four errors as they took a three-run win to sweep the series on Saturday.
Each team scored three runs in the first inning while the Warriors scored on win the second. After two scoreless innings, Nanih Waiya scored two in the sixth to go up 8-5 after six. Each team then scored two runs in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Strayhorn actually outhit Nanih Waiya 7-6 in the contest. Tanner Courtney was 2-for-4 with a double while Bentley King was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Eli Stanton walked twice and scored two runs while Ked Moore scored three runs. Aiden Hill also had two RBIs in the win.
Courtney started on the mound and pitched all seven innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five.
