East Webster’s Lady Wolverine softball team desperately needed some good work on the softball diamond last week and the team delivered.
The Lady Wolverines won two games during spring break and then started off Class 3A, Region 4 play in a big way to go on a mini win streak over the last week.
Starting off the week against an old rivalry in Calhoun City, EWHS took down the Lady Wildcats in six innings, 2-1. The Lady Wolverines scored a run in the fifth inning to get the lead and would hold on to it the next two innings.
Faith Edwards led the way for EWHS with a 2-for-3 day. Paytan Sanders had a triple in the game. Jasie Flora pitched for the Lady Wolverines and had 5.1 innings with six hits, one run, four walks and four strikes.
The Lady Wolverines had another win late in the ball game after that. EWHS scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break a tie and win a 8-4 ball game over Houston. It was a 14-hit barrage for the Lady Wolverines in the win with three hits each at the top of the order by Emma Jennings and Sanders.
Sanders had two RBI in the game and notched three doubles. Edwards finished with two doubles on another two-hit day and Alyssa McCoy went 2-for-4. After Sanders failed to record an out in the first inning, Waydlee Jones came through with 7.0 innings with eight hits, two runs with no walks and three strikeouts.
The first game of Region 4 play was a monster day offensively for the Lady Wolverines. In just three innings, EWHS racked up 27 hits and blew away Aberdeen 28-2 to start 1-0. Every player in the lineup had at least two hits with the top three in the order having four each.
Jennings, Sanders and Flora were all 4-for-4 with Flora hitting two doubles and driving in five runs. Sanders had a cycle with a double, triple and home run in the win and three RBI. Jennings drove in three runs with two doubles.
McCoy also had a double and was 2-for-3 with three RBI, Jones had three hits, three RBI, a double and triple, Larkin Conner was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a triple and Rainey Gray also had three hits. Jones threw 3.0 innings in the circle with three hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
The Lady Wolverines (7-6, 1-0 Region 4) played two more district games earlier this week against Mooreville in games that took place after press time. The team will have a rematch of the last two seasons of playoff softball as they host East Union on Saturday at 12:30.
EWHS plays on the road against Pontotoc on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. with Ethel coming to Cumberland on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
