Last week presented some big tests for the East Webster Lady Wolverines but they passed them with flying colors.
A tough first part of the schedule has prepared the Lady Wolverines for what they’re facing in the back half and that included two big matchups with Bruce and Calhoun City last week. The results were two blowout wins and another big win on Friday against a strong New Hope team for a perfect 3-0 week for John Harris and his team.
The Lady Wolverines hit the road first to Bruce on Tuesday and the bats got hot midway through the game. EWHS pounded out 17 hits and scored five runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 12-3 blowout win.
Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth when EWHS got fie runs across. The Lady Trojans got a run in the fourth and two in the fifth but they couldn’t keep up with the offensive barrage and had just five hits in the game.
Katelee Box had the biggest game of the Lady Wolverines as she went 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles and an RBI. Peyton Flora was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI herself. Emma Jennings, Hallie Beth Reed, Keely Jo McKnight and Addison Edwards all had two hits with Reed driving in three runs and McKnight two.
The Lady Wolverines had an incredible nine doubles with seven different players getting at least one two-bagger and Reed and Box notching two each. Liz Massey threw a good start going a complete game, surrendering five hits, two earned runs, walking just two batters and striking out 11.
EWHS came back home on Thursday to take on a solid Calhoun City team and it was much of the same. The Lady Wolverines scored two or more runs from the second inning to the fifth and walked off a run-rule win 11-1 in five frames. Calhoun City had eight errors to aid in the win for EWHS.
Despite those eight errors and three more walks, EWHS still had nine hits in the game as well. Flora, Emma McKee and Nashlynn Vickers all had two hits while Box and Mckee knocked in two runs with a double from both.
Massey kept the strong week going with her 5.0 innings, four hits, zero earned runs, no walks and seven strikeouts.
After splitting a double-header with New Hope earlier this season, the Lady Wolverines got a chance at a rubber matchup in Columbus on Friday night. The Lady Wolverines played a more clean ball game than the home team and it paid off late in a 4-2 victory.
Of the seven hits in the ball game, Flora delivered three of them with two doubles. Abby Williams had two others and drove in a run and Jennings had a double with two RBI. Massey threw another complete game with six hits scattered, two runs, another game without a walk and she struck out eight batters.
With the wins, EWHS moved to 14-4 on the season and are now 4-0 in Class 2A, Region 2 play. They were set to play at Vardaman on Monday and will host rival Eupora on Thursday night at 6:30 pm followed by a road district contest at Choctaw County on Friday night at 6:30.
