Class 2A, Region 2 play kicked up for Eupora baseball this past week with some wild ball games against Nanih Waiya.
The Eagles split those two games and then lost a matchup with West Point in a 1-2 week on the baseball diamond.
In the first matchup with the Warriors on Tuesday of last week, the Eagles won despite having seven errors in the ball game and just five hits. Eupora had a 2-0 lead after the first and then scored three runs in the bottom of the second to answer a three-run frame from the Warriors.
Leading 5-4 in the fourth, Eupora got another three runs in the bottom of that inning to go up 8-4. Nanih Waiya got closer in the sixth with three more runs making it 8-7 and a run in the bottom of the sixth from Eupora would prove huge as they gave up one run in the seventh but held on for the win, 9-8.
Ames Conrad and Austin Britt each had one hit, but more importantly they finished with two RBI. Ty Murphy had a triple in the game and scored two runs. He also pitched the final 1.2 innings gave up one hit, one unearned run, walked a batter and struck out another.
The Friday matchup was even more wild between the two teams. Both combined for 25 runs and 28 hits and the Warriors scored eight runs in the fifth inning to slip past the Eagles 14-11.
That big inning came after Eupora had taken a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Nanih Waiya managed to get it within 7-6 before the Eagles made it 10-6 in the fifth. That’s when the Warriors exploded with those eight runs to take the lead and the Eagles couldn’t fully get back into it.
Of the 13 hits from Eupora, Tabb Powell led them with a 3-for-4 night. Landry Winter, Hunter Dorroh, Murphy and Conrad all had two hits. Dorroh led the way with three RBI and Murphy and Conrad drove in two runs.
The week ended in West Point on Saturday against the Green Wave and the Eagles saw too many mistake overwhelm them in a 13-2 loss. Eupora gave up seven hits but had six errors defensively and managed to have just two base knocks offensively in a five-inning ball game.
All 13 runs and seven hits came off of the starter Britt but he only gave up four earned runs as defense didn’t help him out. Winter and Powell threw 2.0 innings and didn’t allow a base runner. Powell stuck out three of the six batters he faced.
The losses dropped the Eagles to 3-15 on the season but they’re still in the running in Region 2 at 3-1. That makes this week all the more important for the Eagles as they hosted Eupora on Monday and traveling to Ackerman on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Eagles will host Louisville at 11 am.
