After cancelling the season opener with rival Noxapater, the Nanih Waiya Warriors are anxious to get back on a regular schedule.
Coach James Courtney said practice went about as well as expected.
“It wasn’t too bad but the kids are ready to play somebody else,” Courtney said. “We had some good days and some bad days and that’s to be expected. But I thought for the most part that we had a good week.”
Courtney said the stops and restart to the season was a tough one on his coaching staff and the team.
“It’s tough when you have to restart from scratch and go back to helmets,” Courtney said. “We are limited to two hours and that’s it so that pretty much cuts out weights and any film time. The kids were ready to play last week and then you have to go back with shorts and shoulder pads. They get tired of it and that makes it difficult. We aren’t complaining and just hope we can compete this week. We can’t practice on Monday so that’s another day we are going to miss.”
The Warriors will get on the field this week as they take on East Webster in a two-quarter jamboree with East Webster. The two teams will also play a quarter with the junior varsity players.
Courtney said Tuesday and Wednesday would be regular practice days, weather permitting with Thursday being an extended walk-though day.
“Thursday will be a little more than a regular walkthrough,” Courtney said. “We will keep them a little bit longer. It’s really like playing a Thursday game and having one less day to get them ready. We will probably bring the in after church on Sunday with Monday being Labor Day. I hate not to do anything until Tuesday.”
As for East Webster, Courtney expects a physical test from the Wolverines.
“They are really big up front and no doubt they will be good,” Courtney said. “I know they have a running back with a bunch of offers and they are big up front. They are just lining up and trying to pound at people, as opposed to what they have been doing the last couple of years. They are getting in the I more and doing some wing-T stuff. We just need to play. I don’t care what they do. We just need to get some of our younger guys on the field and get their feet wet.”
