After starting and restarting the football season, Nanih Waiya finally got the football season kicked off last week.
The Warriors travel to East Webster and fell 13-7 in a two-quarter jamboree with the Wolverines.
Coach James Courtney said he saw some good things but was just glad to line up against a different opponent.
“We threw it pretty good at times and got some good looks at some kids,” Courtney said. “We have got some things we have to work on. We tried to treat it like a scrimmage and work on some things but not show too much. I thought we threw the ball decently and ran it good at time. For the most part we were pleased. We just have to play harder and get in better shape.”
The Warriors got the ball to start the game and went three and out. East Webster then scored on its first play as the quarterback raced 70 yards for a touchdown with 10:09 left in the first. The PAT was good and East Webster led 7-0.
After a series of punts, the Warriors finally found the end zone. After a big 47-yard pass, Tanner Courtney hit Hagan Halfacre on a 9-yard touchdown pass. Jake Vick hit the PAT to tie the game at 7-7.
The Wolverines responded with a five-play, 70-yard drive, scoring on a 45-yard run. The PAT failed and East Webster led 13-7, a score that held until halftime.
“I thought our defensive line did well,” Courtney said. “They got after it and we were playing a bunch of guys in new spots. We played a lot of new guys and just trying to move guys around and see how they did. I thought at times, they let down a little. They have to understand the effort you have to bring on every play.”
This week’s game
Nanih Waiya will play its first regular-season game this week as travel to Philadelphia to take on Class 4A Choctaw Central.
Choctaw Central has only played one game, falling 39-13 to Union in the first week of the season.
“They are big up front and have a good wide out and a good quarterback,” Courtney said. “Against Union, they only ran it once or twice in the second half. If they can’t run it, they will abandon ship and just throw it. We will have to limit No. 2, he’s a really good receiver. The quarterback is big, strong and physical. They may run it at us all night but we will have to limit No. 2, he can go.”
Last year, Nanih Waiya beat Choctaw Central 29-13.
