100 Years Ago – May 28, 1920 LOUISVILLE: Gilbert J. Wood of Grenada is the guest of home folks this week. - Mrs. J. D. Shackleford and beautiful little baby girl, Martha Elizabeth, of Newton, are delightful guests of Mrs. Sallie Gordon and Miss Willie Lampley. - The friends of Mrs. J. R. Holmes are delighted to have her at home again after a stay of several months at McGee. She is looking in the best of health and we truly hope she will continue to improve. - Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nabers and pretty little daughter, Martha Leslie of Russiville, Ala. are visiting relatives here. - Attorneys J. B. Gully and Z. A. Brantley made a business trip to New Orleans this week. - Mrs. J. B. Parkes was called to Columbus last Saturday by the illness of her brother. - Miss Annie Hathorn is visiting her brother at Beaumont, Calif. DEATHS: We regret to note the death of Mr. Frank Jernigan, who died at his son-in-law’s, Mr. Chas. Womble, eight miles south of town, on Saturday, May 21st, after a short illness. Mr. Jernigan was a clever man and neighbor, and leaves a wife and several children to mourn his unfortunate death. LOCAL INTEREST: Mrs. H. J. Ferguson of Fearn Springs went to Meridian hospital this week, where it is hoped she may get relief. - Mrs. W. A. Strong and Mrs. W. E. Adams visited Mobile last week, returning home Thursday. - The Confederate Soldiers of our county should not forget the State Reunion to be held at Oxford June 16 - 18th. NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Hunt, Harry Oldham, and Ernest Coleman, left Saturday for Cincinnati, Ohio and will return this week through the country, bringing several Ford cars. - Mrs. Rodger Kilpatrick and little son are visiting her parents, Prof. and Mrs. Pollard at Weir this week. - Mrs. G. W. Cornwell and son, of California are spending a few months here with relatives, are guests in the home of her brother, H. B. Caperton. - Mrs. Jennie Lewis left Wednesday for a visit with her sister, Mrs. McMullen at Meridian. - We are glad to report Jay Estes, who returned home Thursday from the sanitorium at Newton, recovering from his serious illness. - Dr. B. W. Holman, who finished his Veterinary course at Valparaiso, Ind., returned home last week. HINZE: The Farmers of this community are very badly behind with their crops on account of so much rain. - Messers. Henry O. Hinze and Niles Myers left Thursday for Dayton, Ohio, we wish them much success. - We were glad to have Mr. Walter Green with us Sunday. He recently underwent an operation, and is doing nicely. - A number of our young people attended the entertainment at Mr. Ben Kellys last Saturday. - Misses Stella and Irma Taylor were the guests of Miss Annie Landers Sunday. Reed, 23, died from wounds received in action at Okinawa, April 10, according to a telegram received by his father. - Pfc. Herbert E. Holdiness, who would have been 19 this summer, died of wounds received in action in Germany, April 6, according to the telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Holdiness, April 20th. - Horton Giffin, a V-12 dental student at the Univ. of Tenn.-Memphis, was severely burned about two weeks ago, from his knee to his hip, when a vessel of boiling hot water turned over while he was in the process of making false teeth. MARRIAGES: Miss Jane Gardiner, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gardiner of Cecilla, Kentucky, became the bride of Mr. J. D. Blackwood, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Blackwood of Louisville, April 28, at the home of the groom’s family. - Miss Beatrice Hisaw and Mr. Kirk Miller were joined in marriage, April 28, with Rev. W. C. Kitchens performing the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hisaw of Louisville and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mr. Kirk Miller, Sr. The Assembly of God Church was the topic of the local church history and photograph this week. DEATHS: Funeral services were conducted May 1st for Miss Georgia Coleman, 62, at her church, the Universal Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Miss Coleman passed away on April 30th, as a result of a heart attack, following an illness of two years. A Winston county native, Miss Coleman lived on the old Coleman homeplace. She is survived by three sisters and two brothers, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. - With the death of Mr. P. G. (Borie) Whitehead, 83, on May 2nd, the last child of the late Noxubee pioneers Carroll and Annie Eliza Whitehead passed away. He had been living with his daughter at Fearn Springs the last four years. Funeral services were held May 3 at Primitive Baptist Church, Rev. W. C. Kitchens in charge, with burial in the church cemetery. Born 1861, he lived through the Reconstruction era. Throughout his life, he was a student of history, and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren listened attentatively his stories. He was also a student of the Bible. He was admired by all who knew him. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. C. Moody, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. - Funeral services were held April 29 at the Methodist Church for William McKinley Dacus, III, 22-month old son of Cpl. and Mrs. William Dacus, with burial in Memorial Park. While her husband is stationed in Alabama, Mrs. Dacus and her two children are staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Miller. Thursday, the children were playing outside in a sand pile. The car had to be moved and somehow “Brother” moved and was struck by the car. He was rushed to the hospital with a critical compound skull fracture. He died 4 p.m. Friday. LOUISVILLE: Miss Helen Rives of Meridian visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Rives over the weekend. - Capt. and Mrs. S. H. Hindman and baby son Stanley of Rome, N. Y. were recent visitors to Louisville. - George Duck of Jackson, Tenn. was down the past weekend with his wife and daughter. WEDDINGS: Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Lee of Maiden, N. C. announce the marriage of their daughter, Virginia Anne, to Lt. Warren T. Whitmire, son of Mrs. Cora Whitmire of Louisville, April 19, York, S. C. NOXAPATER: Cpl. and Mrs. Paul Early announce the birth of a winsome daughter, Carol Ann, on April 27, Harrison Hospital, Philadelphia. - Mrs. J. M. McCown is a patient at Harrison Hospital where she is under treatment. - Mrs. M. A. Jones visited friends and family near Burnside last weekend. BIRTHS: Cpl. and Mrs. Kearney K. Hall of Noxapater are the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy, born March 28, named Ralph Kearney Hall. - Pfc. and Mrs. William E. (Bubber) Hill announce the birth of a son, William Danny Hill, April 18, at Louisville Hospital. - Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Murphree announce the birth of their daughter, Kay Quinn Murphree, their third child, born April 30, at Louisville Hospital.
