100 Years Ago – May 21, 1920 SUBSCRIPTIONS TO REBUILD CHURCH: We the undersigned pay the amount opposite our names for the erection of a new church at Oak Grove to replace the one destroyed by the storm on April 20th. [The listing included about 80 people who donated more than $400 in total.] LOUISVILLE: Our little friend William Hollingsworth had the misfortune to fall from a road machine last Friday night, which resulted in breaking one of his arms. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Archie Keton, a fine girl on the 17th. - Mr. F. M. Carter of Itta Bena was called to Stallo Saturday by the illness of his mother, who, we are glad to report is much improved at this writing. We are requested by some of the mill men of town to say to the parents of the children who are in the habit of collecting scrap iron around town and selling it, in some instances valuable iron has been taken from the mills, and they would greatly appreciate more care being taken in the matter. MARRIAGES: Mr. Charlie Cade and Miss Corrine McBrayer motored over to Louisville Saturday to the Methodist parsonage and Rev. J. W. Dorman said the inspiring words that united them in marriage. This couple is very popular among a large circle of friends whom we join in wishing them a long and prosperous life. - There was a wedding of interest Wednesday morning when Miss Mamie Kate Lampley became the wife of Mr. Murray Pennington of Louisville. They repaired to the Methodist parsonage where Rev. J. A. Goad performed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Lampley. Congratulation and best wishes for a long, happy, and prosperous life. - Married at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. M. A. Jackson, in the presence of a few friends and relatives, Mr. Lawrence Black and Mrs. Sallie Ashmore, G. W. Jarvis officiating. - Married at the Methodist parsonage in Louisville, May 15th, Dr. Dorman officiating, Mr. Eugene Clark and Miss Minnie Mordis of Kemper county. They will make their home in Meridian. NOXAPATER: Mrs. S. Hopkins and children returned Monday from a visit with her mother, Mrs. Carter near Plattsburg. - David Pendergrass of South Caroline is here this week on a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pendergrass. - The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Estes will learn with pleasure of the rapid recovery of their little son Jay, who underwent an operation last Friday at the Newton Sanitarium, where he was carried by Dr. Watkins, an operation made necessary by an attack of pneumonia which he had suffered for two or three weeks. - Cupid seems to be busy in our midst. Two of our fair young ladies have become victims within the week. - Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Watkins and little son of Forest were guests in the home of the former’s brother, Dr. H. B. Watkins here first of the week. Thrailkill closed his 16-year pastorate at Presbyterian U. S. A. Church with Sunday services April 22. He has accepted the church in Nesbit, Miss, but he and Mrs. Thrailkill will remain in Louisville until mid-May, when they expect their son, Lt. Marvin Thrailkill home on leave from his base at Victoria, Texas. - Mrs. Guy Sellers celebrated her 57th birthday on April 15, and was especially happy to have her only son, Pvt. Aubrey Sellers, who was wounded in Sept. in Germany, at home for the occasion. WEDDINGS: On Saturday, April 7, G. H. Quinton and Sister Beaulah Yarbrough were married at the office of the Circuit Clerk in Louisville. - Mrs. Alice Osborn and D. H. Cockrell were married at the Methodist parsonage Saturday evening, April 7, Rev. Davenport officiating. - Mr. and Mrs. Grady Ray of McCool, Miss. announce the marriage of their daughter, Thelma, to Pfc. Calvin Rasberry, son of Mrs. Minnie Brown of Kosciusko, April 11th.
