The recent COVID-19 outbreak has affected every segment of society including law enforcement.
However, policing is doubtless an essential service, as those who patrol our streets, roads and neighborhoods are there to serve and protect.
Choctaw County Sheriff Brandon Busby said, “It’s not business as usual, but the people put us here to work and we’ve got to serve the public.” Ackerman Chief of Police Tim Cook echoed that sentiment stating that his officers are still doing their jobs, however steps are being taken for their protection.
Cook stated that Ackerman PD officers are still responding to calls, but some activities have been curtailed. To limit exposure during the current crisis his officers are not entering complainants’ homes unless absolutely necessary, car unlocks and people come to the Ackerman PD office for fingerprints and other non-necessary activities have been halted. Officers have also been provided with gloves, masks and hand sanitizer as a precaution.
Busby stated that his officers are also equipped with gloves, masks and hand sanitizer, and are cutting back on certain activities.
He added that the number of people coming to his office has declined as most people are taking the threat seriously and exercising good judgment.
He added that he plans to restart the litter pickup crew soon, and his department has recently purchased a narcotics dog and will soon be putting it to use, as well.
