State Sen. Gary Jackson, R-French Camp, has announced he will be resigning at the end of the month after 17 years in office. He submitted his letter of resignation to Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann on Monday before announcing on the Senate floor that he will be retiring effective June 30. Jackson represents District 15, which comprises Choctaw, Montgomery, Oktibbeha and Webster counties. First elected in 2004, he is chairman of the Municipalities Committee and vice chairman of the Energy Committee. “Senator Jackson, in his most recent election, ran unopposed — there is a reason for that. He is not afraid to take a position or stand up for his constituents, but he has always done so in a way which is respectful and thoughtful while remaining a leader,” said Hosemann in a press release. “His colleagues gave him a standing ovation (Monday) in the Mississippi Senate, and it was well deserved. We are grateful for his service to our state and we wish him the best in the future,” Hosemann added. Jackson cited growing health concerns for his reason in leaving before completing his fifth term, according to news reports. “It’s time, it’s tough for me to do this but June the 30th will be my last day. I appreciate the service of all of you and that’s all I’ve got to say,” he said before leaving the podium. “You leave quite a legacy in this state and within this body. On behalf of the people of the state of Mississippi we appreciate you,” said Hosemann. The governor must call for an election no later than 30 days after a vacancy occurs in the state Legislature. No special election is held if the vacancy happens after June 1 in an election year. Therefore, the District 15 election is expected to be on the general election ballot in November. All qualifying deadlines are 30 days before the election.
