Denetra Darden wanted to make an impact in her community with the events of COVID-19.
As a single mother of two beautiful children, she planned out a reading event on Facebook.
“My oldest child, Emily, is 6 years old and has been affected by the school closings in Winston County. Along with social distancing, it has become difficult for children to have fun while still getting a proper education at home. Emily and I decided to read books every Wednesday until school is in session again on Facebook Live to children who are stuck indoor due to the virus. Our segment is called ‘Me & Emily’,” said Darden.
Their first live video was a success with 295 views.
“We were getting a lot of positive feedback to do more videos,” stated Darden..
Darden is also a member of Project Impact Mississippi.
“Project Impact MS is the premier organization dedicated to preparing students in Mississippi to thrive in an ever-changing technological world,” stated Darden.
Project Impact Communications Director, Timika Morris, reached out to Darden after viewing the Facebook Live to ask if Darden would like to volunteer in reading to children across the state of Mississippi through the Project Impact MS social media.
“We were happy to accept,” said Darden.
They recorded on Wednesday March 25 reading the book “Green Eggs & Ham” by Dr. Seuss, a very popular children’s book well-known across the world on the Project Impact MS Facebook page. Within 48 hours, the video had reached to over 1,200 views. The views ranged from not only Mississippi , but in other states as well who in self-quarantine.
“This has made Project Impact MS Staff and myself very proud,” said Darden.
