On Tuesday, November 27, Mississippians voted in a run-off election to determine who would represent the state in the U.S. Senate, either Republican, Cindy Hyde-Smith or Democrat, Mike Espy.
Hyde-Smith previously served in the Mississippi State Senate and as the Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, before being appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant to serve in the seat being vacated by Senator Thad Cochran.
Espy served in the U.S. House of Representative for the Mississippi 2nd Congressional District from 1987-1993 before appointed by President Bill Clinton as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in 1993.
In Choctaw County, unofficial results show that a total of 2,919 votes were cast in the run-off election with 1,927 going to Hyde-Smith and 992 to Espy. Hyde-Smith won 53.85% of the votes statewide; Espy garnered 46.15%, making Hyde-Smith the first female ever to be elected to the U.S. Senate from the state of Mississippi.
