The Choctaw County Medical Foundation will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for The Sensory Garden on Monday, November 5th, 2018 at 10 AM at the Choctaw County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The Foundation has been actively working on this large project for over a year. Board members include Mike Pearson, Donna McKay, Deanie Graves, Jonnie Silva, and Jim Turnipseed.
A Sensory Garden is a landscaped garden area designed to stimulate all five senses through strategic placement of plant materials, aromatics, water features, garden planting areas, and other proven resources. Sensory, occupational and horticultural therapy will be possible. Research has proven that such a garden can provide significant therapy benefits for dementia and Alzheimer’s individuals as well as others. Improved mental health, learning on multiple levels, personal development including problem solving, motor skills, and other therapeutic benefits are proven advantages of a Sensory Garden.
A concrete walkway throughout will encourage physical exercise outdoors in a fresh air environment. Construction of a wooden fence will insure safety and privacy. Important social interaction with family members and others will be enhanced by a seating area and gazebo.
Ms. Holly Cornett, Director of the CCNRC, said that The Sensory Garden will “provide a much needed area to enjoy and use as a therapy opportunity. We are thrilled to be able to offer such a unique feature to our residents, therapists, and families.”
This project has been funded by membership dues, grants, and donations. No taxpayer dollars will be used. Mr. Pearson, Foundation Board Director, explained, “This is an example of what can be accomplished when community leaders work together toward a common goal to enhance the lives of people in Choctaw County. It has taken hours of planning, fundraising, and meetings to make this happen. The Sensory Garden will be an addition to our area that will showcase what our County and community have to offer.”
The groundbreaking ceremony on November 5th at 10 AM is open to the public. Project completion is expected in January, 2019.
