During their regular meeting, on Monday, July 1, the Choctaw County Board of Supervisors received an annual update from representatives of the Golden Triangle Planning & Development District. The update showed projects in Ackerman, French Camp, Mathiston and other areas of Choctaw County. Social services were highlighted, showing a total of 494 clients served in the past year, at a cost of $379.4K.
The Board heard a request from Rodney Bowman of Sturgis Mat Co. for a tax exemption, as the company plans to move its operations from Sturgis to Choctaw County. A motion was made by Eric Chambers to recognize the presentation and declare the Board’s intention to work toward a tax exemption as information can be compiled. The motion was approved unanimously.
Circuit Clerk Amy Burdine appeared before the Board to request approval of use of the new VotingWorks voting machines in District 5 elections for 2019, which will be a pilot program, not only for the state, but for the entire nation. Burdine also requested the approval of the hiring of Pam Perry as a part-time employee, at a rate of $11/hour. Both requests were unanimously approved.
The Board voted unanimously to approve the following emergency hires by the Sheriff’s Dept: Christal Chism, Jailer/dispatcher; David Ellis, Jailer/dispatcher; Katelyn Burney, Jailer/dispatcher; Nathan Carroll, Deputy Sheriff.
In other action, the Board:
• Voted 5-0 to order the Clerk to issue a Purchase Order in the amount of $15.3K to Spicer Manufacturing for the purchase of a building to be used by the Reform Fire Department to be located at the Sherwood Community Center.
• Voted 5-0 to amend the budget of the County Library in the amount of $8K and order the Clerk to issue a pay warrant in the same amount to the Choctaw County Library Board.
• Voted 5-0 to approve the Resolution dealing with Mississippi Development Authority Grant in the amount of $150K for Crossroads Church Road and to approve a 20% local match on the grant.
• Voted 5-0 to approve the change order in the Soil Cement Road Project 19-1343 dealing with the addition of a Beat 5 Road at an increase of $49.7K.
