Sheriff Jason Pugh and Deputy Keith Alexander recently denoted to the Louisville Rotary Club the multitude of scams through the internet and phone that are going around Winston County.
Sheriff Pugh explained that one of the more notorious telephone scams is when callers claim to be businesses or government agencies in an attempt to steal money or personal information from residents.
The scam, known as “spoofing” occurs when a number displayed on caller ID appear to be coming from a legitimate number, such as a a local bank, but in reality comes from scammers.
“With caller ID spoofing, you can send and receive outgoing or incoming phone calls or texts that appear to be from any phone number of your choosing,” said Sheriff Pugh.
Sheriff Pugh noted in some scams persons are told to withdraw money from a bank, and send overnight or they will be will be arrested or someone they are kin to or know is under arrest and needs the money.
Sheriff Pugh noted if persons receive a suspicious call demanding payment money or information please contact the Sheriff’s office. Sheriff Pugh outlined a number of other scams.
