During their February meeting the Weir Board of Aldermen discussed the problem of litter around the town. The suggestion was made that the Town schedule a clean-up day, publicize it and bring members of the community together to clean up the litter. Mayor Shuni Coffey suggested Saturday, March 2. No action was needed, but the Board agreed to hold the clean-up day on that date beginning at 7 a.m.
In the same vein, Jimmy Mangrum addressed the Board concerning the state of the Town, pointing out that in years past there had been a number of viable businesses, but many businesses had closed leaving empty buildings. He also mentioned a number of empty, dilapidated houses which are an eyesore on almost every side of town, and asked if there is anything the town could do to compel the property owners to perform a clean-up. Mangrum added that in its current state the Town would have difficulty attracting new businesses.
Board Attorney, Ray Baum stated that there is a legal process to compel owners to clean their property; it must be deemed a menace to public health and safety. Aldermen members assured Mangrum that they have not been ‘sitting on their hands’ and are concerned about the problem, as well.
Rosie Miller spoke to the Board concerning the late fee on her gas bill at Weir Apartments. If the bill is not paid by the 10th of each month the tenants are charged a $20 late fee. The Board discussed changing the due date on gas bills to the 15th of each month to better accommodate the tenants, however, the measure was tabled to give the Board an opportunity to look into the matter and other issues in the ordinance.
