The two previous mayors and a former alderman are running for mayor of Eupora in a special election.
The final qualifier was Blake McMullan of 305 Whites Creek Road. The former mayor’s resignation from the office created the vacancy requiring the special election later this month.
He submitted a petition with the signatures of at least 50 registered Eupora voters on Oct. 25, which was the final day for candidates to qualify. The city Election Commission has since certified him as an eligible candidate.
McMullan signed a letter of resignation immediately after an executive session to discuss personnel and possible litigation during a city board meeting Sept. 18. Before adjournment, an alderman’s motion to terminate Police Chief Lawrence Caradine failed 2-3. McMullan later stated he resigned because of personnel issues within the Police Department.
As previously reported, the other two candidates for mayor are Larry Atkins and Lamar Dumas. Atkins is a former Realtor and insurance agent who has served as a city alderman, justice of the peace and vice chairman for the Regional Housing Authority.
Dumas is retired from the Natchez Trace Electric Power Association and was a lineman instructor at Holmes Community College. He preceded McMullan as mayor, losing his reelection bid to him by five votes two years ago.
The special election will be held from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Community Center. In addition to weekdays, City Hall will be open from 8 a.m.-noon the two Saturdays before the election, Nov. 4 and 11, for absentee voting.
Jerry Gary, alderman-at-large, is serving as interim mayor in his position as mayor pro tempore.
