A Montgomery County man dubbed the “Barefoot Bandit” has been charged with stealing a vacuum from a Walthall carwash.
The stainless steel vacuum was stolen June 5 from the carwash by Stewart’s TV & Appliances on Highway 9, according to the Webster County Sheriff’s Department.
The sheriff’s office, on its Facebook page, posted still shots from surveillance video of an unidentified man it was seeking in connection with the theft. The WCSD requested the public’s help in identifying the barefooted man, who was driving a Toyota Tacoma.
The department reported that the “Barefoot Bandit” was arrested June 6. Alan James Chapman was charged with grand larceny and booked into the Webster County Jail. The sheriff’s office thanked the Winona Police Department and all who shared the post.
The vacuum was valued at over $1,000, according to an affidavit Deputy John Stone filed against Chapman charging him with the felony. Chapman, 42, has a Middleton Road address in Winona.
Justice Court Judge Rebecca Ellison set bond at $5,000 and appointed public defender Stephanie Mallette to represent him. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 12.
Jail records show Chapman, who had a “hold” for Carroll County, posted bond Friday morning. According to the WCSD, a defendant who has a hold from another county and posts bond on the original charge is either picked up at the jail by the other law enforcement agency or transported to another location to complete the transfer.
