WRITEON for
MAY 8
sister alies.
The NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, May 2, 2019, was held in the courtroom of the courthouse and thanks to many people we shared a few minutes of prayer and concern. Folks from around the county gathered and were led in prayer by men from several walks of life. Our time together was opened by Bro. Little and the CCHS choir sang the National Anthem beautifully. After pledging allegiance to the flag we were led in prayer by Bro. Gates reminding us of why we pray. He was followed by Steve Montgomery asking us to pray for those in government; Sgt. Mitchell Harris (recently returned from combat) for our military; Terry Bellew for our educational system; Bro. Gillespie for our churches; John Shumaker for our families; Dakota Brasher for our businesses; and Bro. Jerry Lawson for the media. We ended with Bro. Sammy Barksdale's Benediction. Thanks to those from Enon who prepared a munchy lunch for all attending.
Across the country people gathered to pray...to ask God not only to bless but to put us to work in the cleansing and growth of our nation. Prayer can be dangerous...if we don't do the things the Lord reveals. Otherwise it's just words that may make us feel good for a few minutes. Things that spring to mind, given these particular categories, are being sure folks are registered to vote and making voting easy, especially on the day. May 2 was also Senior Night @ the Community Center and the NAACP (among others) presented a $200 scholarship. We want to celebrate those who defend us, but we also need to be working for peace that their services might not be needed so often. Our Churches and families need to cross some of those lines still in play around the community, opening out ways of learning from each other and clearly taking risks at healing racism and gerrymandering. Our businesses need to continue to grow so that fair prices and local products and talents are fronted. Finally we need to support our newspapers and radio stations in bringing us news worthy stories. They also need, besides all the social media, to be platforms for discussion and places to learn...not just havens for 'fake news'...no matter whose it is.
Our lives are deeply knit together even if it does not seem so...our hopes on a day like this are that all of us can grow and be deepened in our commitment to both love of God and love of neighbor.
May is NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH month...so many instances of hidden disease around...Be alert and sympathetic to those who suffer with any kind of mental/emotional disease.
BLESSINGS.
