Last Friday, Louisville Elementary school hosted a few local entities to show why natural resource stewardship is important. Not just important to mankind, but to all the woodland and wetlands creatures. This was a great opportunity for MSU Extension, MDWFP, and Winston Plywood to team up and tell that very important story.
Mr. Speedy Calvert, Winston Plywood Community Advisor did just that with a book reading, ‘From Tree to Treehouse’ which explained why and how trees are used and important for our homes and natural resources. After the book reading, MDWFP officer Jay Shotts, and Jim McAdory MSU Extension agent showed the students a collection of animal furs, and skulls.
The animal furs and skulls were very handy at explaining where animals live. The furs were made up of a variety of woodland and wetland animals. Officer Shotts and McAdory explained habitat and food sources provided by trees to all the animals and humans alike. Officer Shotts explained why hunting is important. He also explained why laws to protect animals were established, and that law enforcement is there to help people and animals.
The Louisville elementary students ask and answered a lot of questions posed by all the speakers, so it was evident the students are being taught well. We appreciate the invitation to speak and reinforce what the students learn from their teachers.
It was a great time for us all! Keep up the great work LES staff!
