Webster County’s unemployment rate dropped 1.1 percentage points during September, according to preliminary numbers from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Webster County’s rate stood at 4.8% during September, down from 5.9% in August and 6.3% in September 2020. September's rate was the lowest since the 4.5% rate seen in November 2018.
The estimated number of unemployed Webster Countians in September decreased by 40 to 190. The labor force, which is made up of everyone who has a job or is looking for one, was unchanged at an estimated 3,920.
MDES statistics from 1990 forward show the county’s highest unemployment rate for September came in 2002, when it reached 15.1%. The lowest rate for that period was in 1998, when it dropped to 4%. The 12-month moving average is 6%.
September jobless rates in adjoining counties: Calhoun, 4.3%; Chickasaw, 5.5%; Choctaw, 4.3%; Clay, 6.4%; Grenada, 4.1%; Montgomery, 5.3%; and Oktibbeha, 4.6%.
Mississippi’s unemployment rate for September was 4.7% and the national jobless rate was 4.6%, both not seasonally adjusted.
