Winston 4-H fishing club had a great afternoon last week spending time with a really positive sport fishing mentor, Mr. Hap Hickman. Mr. Hickman introduced our 4-Hers to crappie fishing basics. The group learned about crappie fishing rod configurations, lures, knots, different crappie species, spawn times, and importance of fishing depths.
Hap also showed the group how to set up a boat for fishing, must have boating supplies, motor maintenance, and much more. One of the topics our 4-Hers and parents really appreciated was how he started fishing as child, and how it’s been a lifelong learning experience.
Not only do our 4-Hers learn how to chase Mississippi’s game fish species, they get special opportunities to learn from experts of the sport like Mr. Hap Hickman. I can guarantee these young people will learn about fishing, but as well, witness firsthand how the sport of fishing has enhanced these adults quality of life.
I happy to say our community is full of really great positive adults for our young people to emulate. Mr. Hickman is definitely one of those people, and our club is thankful for his time, expertise, and willingness to teach us what he’s learned about one of Mississippi’s most sought after game fish. Thank You Hap!
Lastly, a big congratulations to our club. The Winston County 4-H Sport Fishing Club is now officially recognized by MSU 4-H as a chartered club. This is a great step forward for Winston 4-H. So on behalf of the Winston Extension office staff, congratulations to all club members, volunteers, and parents. Well done!
