Last year’s first-ever Career Expo, sponsored by the Winston-Louisville Career Technical Center, was such a great success that WLCTC’s director, Shane McDaniel, decided to plan for a bigger and better event in 2024.
At least 34 organizations sent representatives to fill the Louisville Coliseum on Friday, February 19. Students in middle and high school from all county schools came to learn about the careers available right here in Winston County.
McDaniel said that one of his chief goals is to promote the county and to retain the talent that we have right here at home. This is why he organized the Career Expo in 2023 and why they hosted the event again this year.
Careers from the medical field, education, agriculture, and multiple industries were on hand for the event. Representatives from East Central Community College and Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering were also on tap for the event.
Medical professionals from Dr. Mark Donald’s office as well as Dr. Cassie Wells from Bed Bark and Bath are just two examples of healthcare opportunities. They were joined by Louisville Eye Clinic (a part of Mississippi Eye Care).
Winston Plywood and Taylor Machine Works were also on hand as the leading industrial employers in the county. TMW brought a few pieces of equipment, and there were representatives from Taylor Sudden Service available to speak to future prospective employees.
Members of the city’s fire department, the police department, and the sheriff's office were also available as well as Robert Oswalt from the Mississippi National Guard.
Overall, the Coliseum was packed with people who promoted working right here at home in Winston County. McDaniel says that they plan to host this event again next year with an even larger group of vendors.
