Yes, it is…really! August already. Who knew how fast the summer would go…who knew how hot it might get other places on the planet? Seems like hope is on the way…Parchman Prison (and others) to finally get A/C! Death row a particularly nasty place…and if you are of a mind to say, ‘they deserve it’, think on the guards who work there. Today (Aug. 3) we remember the Voting Rights Act, 1965, President LBJ signs into law. Let’s keep that going too!
I ‘traveled’ with Pope Francis on his Canada trip last week…TV is a generous deliverer of good news. I was humbled by his gutsy pleas for forgiveness…if only I could be so brave! You know for some it was like fresh breezes we feel in the cool of the morning…for others it will never be enough. Healing and forgiveness are part of a dynamic that follows a process…admission of guilt, desire to amend, and the apology. The big work then is to keep it going, healing and discerning new ways to live with one another for the common good. Probably every state, country, or family have things in history that we could be sorry about…the way we treated others, the way we keep others from advancing, the ways we make ‘me’ first. We might need to focus. The Armenians have a proverb: “If you run after two rabbits, you won’t catch either one.”
“To me, it appears likely in the coming decades we will have information on at least hundreds of other planetary systems close to us as vast as the Milky Way!” (Carl Sagan,1996). And have you seen the pics of all, those galaxies…and stars and such from the new telescope? I mean massive and the clarity when you figure that it’s 1 million miles away from earth…working on its own. What human beings can put together when allowed to develop our genius! Will we see back, back, and a way back…they say yes…?
Did I mention already the new Women’s Series quarters? You have probably seen the first two in change already…Maya Angelo, and Sally Ride…the next one is Wilma Mankiller, the first woman Chief of the Cherokee Nation. The last two for 2022 will be Nina Otero-Warren, leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement, and Anna Maty Wong, first Chinese Hollywood film star! The obverse has a different head design by Laura Gardin Fraser, early sculptor of 20th century. So watch for that…
