Eupora Rotary Club members enjoyed a presentation on May 9 from Marica C. Bernstein about her first book.
She is the author of “Miss Missy’s School: Book I: A Pack of Farm Dogs Starts a School.” The book was illustrated by Caroline L. Cooper of North Carolina, who is Bernstein’s oldest daughter.
The family-oriented story concerns a pack of dogs who come to realize they need a school for all the animals on their farm who want to learn and teach from the great books of knowledge passed down to them, and the challenges they face.
Bernstein described it as a character-driven story whose intended audience is ages 7-12/grades 3-6 but one that grownups should enjoy as well. It includes vocabulary words and quotations by famous historical characters, along with an index of “Missy-isms, Quotation first words, Persons, and Old Things & Ways.”
The author formed Old Schoolhouse Road Publishing to self-publish the book in 2021. The publisher’s name is derived from the old school building on School House Road in Walthall; Bernstein and her husband live on a farm in that area.
Bernstein’s presentation included discussion of children’s classic literature and the business of self-publishing. She is at work on three more books in the “Miss Missy’s School” series. The next one is “Miss Missy’s School Days.”
