Ten years – ten years has brought so many changes to Winston County. In early April 2014, no one could have predicted the destruction that would come to our area on April 28, 2014.
Certainly, early on the morning of April 28, 2014, none of those who lost loved ones as a result of that horrific EF-4 tornado would have imagined that they would be seeing those individuals for the last time.
While it is important to commend those responsible for volunteering, cleaning, providing meals, and those who helped to rebuild Winston County, it is also important to remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day.
Ruth Bennett, Jerry Carter, Leonard Carter, Shawn Fowler, Gregory Jernigan, Sara Massey, Cathy Ferguson Smith, Dora Triplett, Terri Tucker, Tyler Tucker – it is in honor of these ten that the City of Louisville has planned a tenth anniversary special commemoration.
On Sunday, April 28, there will be a remembrance held at the Louisville Memorial Cemetery at 4:00 PM (the time the tornado hit). The public is invited to attend, but, there will also be a Facebook Live feed for those who are unable to physically be there. This will be on the Louisville Safe Room/Public Safety page.
On Friday, a wreath honoring those we lost will be placed at the monument where Main Street and Columbus Avenue intersect. On Sunday morning, you may hear church bells or sirens sounding out ten times at 10:00 AM. Each toll is also meant to honor those taken in the tornado’s wrath.
Remembrance – this is the theme for this year’s April 28, 2014, commemoration. We remember those we lost; we honor their lives. Please join us at the Louisville Memorial Cemetery at 4:00 PM this Sunday.
