A young Mathiston woman was killed last week when her car collided with the rear of an 18-wheeler in Oktibbeha County, the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported.
Staff Sgt. Derrick Beckom, Troop G public affairs officer, said MHP responded to the fatal crash on U.S. 82 in Oktibbeha County around 8:24 a.m. March 1. The crash occurred near the Center Grove community.
“A 2007 white Peterbilt 18-wheeler driven by 51-year-old Michael Paul Monroe of Eupora was traveling eastbound on U.S. 82 when a 2011 Toyota Camry driven by 20-year-old Trinity Burton of Mathiston, who was also traveling eastbound on U.S. 82, collided with the rear of the 18-wheeler,” Beckom stated.
Burton was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Beckom, while Monroe was not injured.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the MHP.
Burton was a 2020 graduate of East Webster High School. Services were Saturday at Wise-Reed Funeral Home with burial in Clarkson Cemetery. An online fundraiser has been set up to assist her family.
